Fall is here and as we make a gradual transition to winter, there are a few things you can do to prepare for colder weather. The following are simple tips that will go a long way toward improving your comfort and keeping your energy bills in line.
Schedule an HVAC Tune-up
Before you use your heating system, have it serviced by an HVAC technician to ensure that it operates at peak efficiency. Our technicians work off of an exhaustive list to make sure your furnace is up to the challenge of providing reliable comfort all winter long. Here are just some of the things we’ll be watching for:
The condition of the duct system
Condition/operation of the thermostat
Gas piping and flue vent
Low and high voltages
Investing in preventative maintenance reduces the likelihood of a breakdown, which you definitely do not want happening in the middle of a polar vortex.
Check You Exterior Faucets
After watering your lawn and flowers for the last time, you need to drain the outdoor faucets so that there is no water left in the lines that could freeze in the winter. You also need to begin wrapping the pipes underneath your home to insulate them from freezing temperatures as well. Store any water hoses in a secure area, wrapping the faucet itself so that it doesn't get damaged until it's used again.
Here’s an easy DIY job you can accomplish on a Saturday afternoon: inspect all exterior doors and windows for drafts. You can do this by lighting a candle and holding it up to the doors and windows. If the flame begins to flicker rapidly, you’ve found a draft. Seal around windows with calking and use weatherstripping around doors. This will keep warm air inside where it belongs.
