Should I Repair or Replace My Water Heater?

Should I Repair or Replace My Water Heater?

Determining if a water heater can be repaired or should be replaced is quite simple. Water heaters have very few moving parts. Therefore, if the pressure relief valve sticks, or the thermostat breaks, or the burner, or heating elements fail, then we can replace those parts fairly inexpensively if the water is not hot enough then signs point towards replacing the thermostat or heating elements. If the pressure-relief valve is leaking or it doesn’t snap back after lifting it, then it’s broke, and we can replace the valve. If the supply pipes are leaking, we can either tighten the pipes or replace them, again all relatively inexpensively.

When is it necessary to replace your water heater?

If your water heater is over ten years old or there are signs it is leaking water, these are good indications that it is time to replace it.

When replacing your old tank with a new one, there are a few things to keep in mind and consider:

  1. New building codes require certain changes to be made with the new installation, and we are up to speed on all new building codes.

  2. Your budget versus overall cost. We can help you make a sound decision by breaking down the cost for you, by helping you to determine what’s best for you, your budget and your household size.

  3. Should you go the tankless or traditional route?

Traditional or Tankless?

Any upgrade you choose is going to be far more efficient and save you money vs. the old unit.

Tankless Water Heaters:

  1. It will heat water on demand.

  2. It’s compact and can fit in the most convenient place for your home, even outside.

  3. It costs more than a traditional water heater, even to install. However, it will save you far more money in the long run, year after year.

  4. The life span is 20 plus years.

Traditional Water Heaters:

  1. It costs less to purchase and to install.

  2. They typically have a higher utility price than tankless water heaters.

  3. They take up more space and can’t be installed outside.

  4. The life span is only 10-15 years.
